Ford Transit Low Roof vs Medium Roof vs High Roof: Which Configuration Fits Your Business?

Multiple Ford Transits parked outside a building

The Ford Transit full-size light commercial vehicle debuted in the USA for the 2015 model year and quickly caught the attention of American buyers, becoming the best-selling van of any type in the United States, including minivans.

Locally manufactured by the Ford Motor Company at the Kansas City Assembly Plant, Ford’s top-selling van fills many roles, from a versatile work vehicle and fleet transport to a popular base for custom "van life" camper conversions.

Available at Best Ford Pro-Elite in Nashua, NH, the Ford Transit, in its many configurations, including three roof height options, offers buyers endless solutions to their commercial needs.

What Ford Transit body styles are there to choose from?

The 2026 Ford Transit is now available in three models: Cargo Van, Passenger Van XL, and Passenger Van XLT, offering prospective commercial buyers ample choices to suit their business needs.

Depending on the model, buyers can choose from three roof heights, two body lengths, and four weight ratings to suit varying business requirements.

Shoppers can configure their Transit to be tall enough for most people to stand comfortably inside and load cargo, or even outfit it as a mobile workshop with sufficient headroom to work onsite or as a camper van to enjoy their ‘vanlife’ lifestyle.

What are the exterior dimensions of the Ford Transit?

In addition to three available roof heights, the latest Ford Transit Van is offered in two wheelbase lengths for the Transit Cargo Van and in one wheelbase length for the Passenger Van.

Buyers of the Cargo Van can choose either a 130-inch or 148-inch wheelbase, with a length of 235.5 inches to 237.6 inches, or an extended Length of 263.9 inches with the 148-inch wheelbase.

The Passenger Van XL rides on a 148-inch wheelbase with a length of 235.5 inches, and the Passenger Van XLT measures in at 263.9 inches long

Three roof height options are available on the 2026 Ford, as we've already shared, depending on configuration:

  • Low Roof Transit Van ranges from 82.4 inches to 82.9 inches
  • Medium Roof Transit Van ranges from 99.1 inches to 101.3 inches
  • High Roof Transit Van ranges from 109.6 inches to 110.4 inches

Helping with the loading of cargo is a 50/50 hinged rear door offering a standard 180-degree opening on all low- and medium-roof cargo vans and all passenger vans, while a 253-degree opening is standard on all high-roof cargo vans and is an option for all low- and medium-roof variants and High-Roof Passenger Vans.

How much cargo can I load in the Ford Transit?

Buyers looking for maximum cargo volume for commercial needs such as customer deliveries, courier services, or outfitting as a mobile workshop should consider both Cargo and Passenger Vans with High Roof and extended-length configurations.

With this configuration, the Cargo Van offers a maximum cargo volume of 537.4 cubic feet behind the first row of seats, and the Passenger Van offers up to 461.9 cubic feet behind the first row of seats.

How many passengers can the Ford Transit seat?

Buyers of the Cargo Van, with a primary role of cargo carrying, can seat up to two passengers in the front row.

Commercial shuttle services, school transport, or businesses offering staff transport can look to the Passenger Van XL, which seats 12 passengers, and the Passenger Van XLT, which will accommodate up to 15 passengers when typically configured with five rows: two in the front, three in the middle rows, and four in the final row.

Which roof height is best for my business?

Deciding which roof height is best for you depends on your daily commercial operations.

Buyers should consider their operating space: Low Roof Transit Cargo Vans excel in tight clearances and urban parking, while the Medium Roof configuration provides sufficient standing headroom and easier access to home garages.

The High Roof Transit Van offers maximum vertical storage and standing space for mobile workshops, as well as easy loading and offloading for customer delivery fleets.

The choice of Roof height will also depend on your plans for outfitting your Transit Van’s interior with features like shelving, workbenches, machinery, or cargo racking.

Low Roof

Low Roof Transit Vans are best suited to mobile trades and parcel couriers operating on mixed suburban routes that require frequent access to multi-story parking garages, carports, or drive-thrus.

The lower profile avoids the inconvenience of low-overhead clearance issues in and around suburban routes, and the lower center of gravity improves handling and fuel efficiency, but unfortunately at the expense of sufficient standing room.

Medium Roof

A medium roof height is best for crew transport, businesses such as mobile detailing, or contractors who frequently need to step inside their Transit Van, but still require modest clearance for parking garages and customer premises.

Average-height adults can stand fully upright, making the Medium Roof a wise choice for stealth camping or for all-around urban commercial utility.

High Roof

With an interior height between 77 and 81.5 inches, a Ford Transit Van fitted with a High roof is best suited for delivery operations, parcel services, high-capacity shelving upfits, mobile pet grooming, mobile workshops, or even mobile shops where you will need to spend more time standing and working.

The increased vertical storage capacity allows for multi-tier cargo racks and full walk-through capability without bending over and risking back injuries.

There are, however, some trade-offs, such as higher wind resistance, lower fuel economy, and no chance of getting your Van into a standard parking garage.
